According to the latest information gotten , at least ten persons have been confirmed dead including four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in a Boat mishap from Bonny Island to Portharcourt.

Coordinator of the National Emergency management Agency, NEMA, Mr Onimode Bandele said that rescue efforts are still ongoing in the search for more passengers. You can read up the statement below:

“We can confirm that 10 persons died early today when a Port Harcourt bound passenger boat sank. Rescue efforts are ongoing and the agency is already working with other bodies and security agencies in the rescue efforts.”He said.

Below is the statement made by the caretaker chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Adonye Wilcox.

“Information available indicates that the boat hit an object on the way and sank.Local divers have rescued17 persons, including four members of the National Youth service corps, while 10 persons died as a result of the accident” he said.

Although some unconfirmed reports states that the boat mishap was caused by a break and tear, other sources admitted that the accident was caused by the lack of effective maintenance routine from the parts of the drivers or the maintenance engineer.

Please note that the certainty of the actual numbers of persons that died is currently under verification as the search still continues.

Atleast 10 persons have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying 35 people capsized in the early hours of today August 29th .
