The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Olusegun Odubela, has identified poor teaching method and lack of inner drive among pupils as some of the factors responsible for the failure in Mathematics.
He stated this in Abeokuta on Wednesday at a workshop for Mathematics and science teachers.
The workshop was to further empower the teachers.
The commissioner noted that for any country to witness rapid socio-economic and technological development, it must invest in the teaching of Mathematics and science education of its young ones.
He said, “Any country that is serious about rapid growth and technological advancement must pay attention and invest heavily in Mathematics and science education of its young ones.”
The state Universal Basic Education Board Chairman, Chief Mufutau Ajibola, in his remarks, noted that the training of teachers became imperative, as no nation could rise above the quality of its teachers.
Ajibola, while stressing the importance of Mathematics and science, noted that without good grades in the subjects, it was impossible for any pupils to secure admission to any higher institution in the country.
He said, “If the quality of a teacher is directly proportional to the quality of the curriculum content in the education system, with relevant teaching aids and modern techniques, then the discharge of such curriculum content becomes an easier task.
“Teachers’ quality has been described as the most important key to improving pupils learning achievement.”
Ajibola added that the workshop was to upgrade the teaching skills of the teachers from a chalk and talk/teacher-centred method to a pupil/activity-based centred approach.
