The Vice-Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Hilary Edeoga, has lauded the Commonwealth of Nations for its numerous education interventions in member countries.
Edeoga made this known at an event to mark this year’s Commonwealth Day in the university.
According to the VC, the fate of education in the country would have been in shamble if not for numerous interventions of Commonwealth.
He commended the organisation for instituting numerous scholarships and exchange programmes that are beneficial to Nigerian universities.
The VC, who also hailed the Federal Government for its increasing attention to education, acknowledged that MOUA had received N2.7bn being the first tranche of its N5.4bn grant for infrastructural rehabilitation.
Linking the development in the university to improved funding, Edeoga added that its annual allocation, which hitherto stood at N3bn, had increased to N6.5bn.
He noted that the university’s annual admission quota had increased from 1,250 to 5,000 students, with the student population now increasing to 25,000.
The VC, who said the university was one of the fastest growing universities in the country, promised that it would witness more expansions and new academic programmes in the years ahead.
