THE Senate of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) said it has approved the establishment of its first Distance Learning Outreach Centre in Gombe.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ibrahim Njodi, who disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit on the Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, called on the state government to provide a befitting place for the immediate take-off of the centre.
He said the approval of the programme by the Senate had made the university an institution that provided both conventional academic programmes and the distance learning.
The objective is to make university education accessible to a large number of potential adults, who have missed the opportunity of higher education at early stage of their lives. “And to widen opportunities to matured adults to combine working and learning to as many families who were unable to obtain support or secure in-service facilities,” he said.
According to him, the successful commencement of the outreach service will provide more opportunities to the state and its environs. Njodi expressed concern about the special arrangement offered by the university on remedial courses, saying it had been suspended.
He appealed to the state government to sustain the programmes to enable potential students from the state get admission into the university.
He said that the programme would complement the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). “I am pleased to note that the University of Maiduguri has been one of the most cosmopolitan universities in the country with students coming from every state of the country,” he further said.
Governor Dankwambo said that the state government would provide centre for the immediate commencement of the distance learning programmes. He said that the first, second and third priorities of his administration were education.
