The oldest and the second oldest cathedral in Nigeriaand West Africa  is located in a town called bonny island located in the south-south of Nigeria in Rivers state.

The saint Stephen cathedral as it is named started as a school chapel, a parish and graduated to a cathedral on request. The Amanyanabo (king) of Bonny, the Christian converts and foreigners all worshiped in the first mud wall school chapel covered with bamboo thatch built in February 1866. This was opened for divine service on April of that year.
Several structural changes took place: from the mud structure to larger board structure to larger board structure covered with corrugated galvanized iron roofing sheet. Much later the ambitious Christians of bonny nursed the idea of not merely enlarging their chapel but for an iron church.
Between 1889-1931.archideacon D.C Crowther gave reasons(quick decay of wood due to environmental factors) for the building of the iron church in a letter dated july 11,1880,addressed to his auxiliary helpers in the church.
On May 6, 1887, the venerable Archdeacon convened a meeting of the amanyanabo, chiefs and some notables where they discussed, agreed and raised money for the construction of the iron church. The church cost them 2,000 pounds with a capacity of 900 to 1,000 seating capacity.
The cathedral continues to undergo structural changes for the better. During the tenure of the Rev. R.N Bara Hart as the pastor in charge of the cathedral (1931-1933), major restricting of the iron church took place. The old imported church of iron sheets was changed to block as now found.
