Striking unions at the Federal College of Education (FCE), (Technical), Akoka on Monday said reached an agreement with the Federal Government toward meeting their demands.
Mr Nicolas Ogbusuo, Chairman Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN) FCE, Akoka Chapter, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the strike could be suspended soon.
Ogbusuo said the Feb. 4 meeting between the three unions, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and the institution’s authorities in Abuja ended with a resolution.
He said the meeting was directed by the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.
The SSUCOEN official said the NCCE had promised to settle the debt owed the college staff by the end of next month.
“We will hold a congress today to brief our members on the resolutions reached with the representative of the government at the Abuja meeting.
“If congress is satisfied with the negotiation then, there is possibility for us to suspend the strike,” he said.
NAN reports that three unions of the college on Jan.30 declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike, due to the non-implementation of their demands by the college authorities.
The unions were demanding arrears of their promotion and increment from October 2013 till date.
The unions are the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union; the Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), FCE(T), Akoka Chapter.
