The Rivers State Government says those found culpable in the arson, looting and violent attacks that rocked the state polytechnic, RIVPOLY will be punished in line with the law.
The State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi said this when she led the Rivers State House of Assembly committee on Education to the vandalized campus in Bori.
Mienabelem Michael-West, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, who represented the Commissioner said it was disappointing to know that students resorted to violence rather than focus on their studies.
“The government has expended so much resources to provide infrastructure. It is so sad that the students have destroyed the facilities provided for them.
“The Rector has assured us that they will get to the bottom of it.
“It is my prayer that the police will help to fish out the culprits because this kind of violence in a civilized society cannot go unpunished.
“We believe that something should be done”, he said.
Speaking to newsmen after taking a tour of the campus, House Committee Chairman on Education, Augustine Ngo said the level of damage done on the institution would have been minimal if the police responded promptly to the distress call.
Ngo, however, assured that the Rivers State House of Assembly will look into the matter and come out with its own resolutions.
“What we are going to do as a Committee is to report our observations and our findings to the House of Assembly, which will now inform the opinion of what should be done.
“I also think the security is not enough because if we had a better security, I don’t think this level of damage will be done.”
On his part, the Rector of RIVPOLY, Obianko Elechi said the institution was still concerned about the safety of its students before they consider the reopening of the school.
DailyPost reports that no arrest has been made since the incident occurred two weeks ago.
