In a bid to introduce young school children to the culture of agriculture as a business for effective sustainability, President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday, launch the schools agricultural programme.

The programme which is expected to catch them young ‎and has a life span of six years within which there will be a withdrawal strategy is aimed at inculcating the spirit of agriculture into school children through social school clubs with agriculture abd business as foundation and also through collaboration with the Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council(NERDC) in its Agric curriculum formation.

The the senior special assistant to the president on schools Agric programme, Dr Baraka Sani, who disclosed this during a courtesy call on the minister of education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau‎, emphasized that the success of the programme must to sustained throughout implementation as it sets to address the issue of unemployment especially for those who cannot procede immediately to tertiary institutions.

She further urged on the minister to prevail on behalf of the programme by encouraging a change in the establishment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund(TETFund) law so that the organisation can be part of the programme through sponsorships and other interventions ‎.

‎The minister in his remark, commended the project as laudable and disclosed that for a smooth take-off and effectiveness of the programme, the dearth of agric teachers must be addressed as the initiative will build in the students patriotism and self respect.

On the issue of TETFu‎nd, the minister encouraged that ” you should leaise with the National Assembly and if possible, try and lobby so that they can make some adjustments in the law that governs TETFund because as it is, not even the president can give a go ahead with the assent of the lwa making body.”

The programme is expected to deal with all fields of agriculture such as poultry‎, fisheries, etc.
