This is an open letter to the King of Grand Bonny by Comr Samuel Jumbo. Just incase you don’t know much about Bonny, You can read up the previous article about Bonny Island In Rivers State.
Words fail me, I confess. But, you see, its like this….Our King, King Edward Asimini William Dappa Pepple, is a just King. Everyone admits it that he has ruled the land with wisdom and fairness. But still, with all that, we have not become a prosperous people, have we? So much poverty, so much unhappiness still everywhere! Not even the King has been able to purge his chiefs of corruption and greed. And as for our people, see, too many superstition hold us down. Too many little rifts divide us. We are like a river that has spread into a lake and then grown stagnant.
Soon, my dear youths and people of this island, if we do nothing about it, we will decay and die. The signs of rot are already there, already spreading! Look at the misguided life our youths live, the rise of mindless violence on our streets, our gradual loss of faith in ourselves….something has to be done! But what? We must discover new tributaries, new outlets of renewal. We must feed from fresh waters ….but how? The challenge is for us, for the youths of my generation, but unfortunately, we do not have the answers here.
To find them, we must travel out to learn from others, those who started earlier than us. Thanks to Hon.Barr. Edward Pepple for his unreserved concern towards human capital development and numerous scholarships for students to study abroad and that’s why am outside also before I settle down, Before the honey of marriage sucks me in too like a swamp. One advice to our King and leaders, there’s ruling well, and there’s ruling long. No king nor political leader can last without the wisdom of others to hold him up. If a roof seems solid and formidable, it is because it rests on strong pillars. “DEJAVU”. Long live Bonny Youths, Long live Bonny Kingdom, Long live River State. Samuel Nifemi T.B Jumbo (comr)
