Medical students of the University of Calabar have been subjected to terrible and grossly unhealthy environment.
The Hostel is actually an annex of the clinical (Hall 2) hostel and has been under renovation since 2014. Since then students have been living under open heavens as they have graciously received showers during the raining season.
Attention of the management has been called, leading to minor patches being made, creating a rather mosaic pattern of the roofing sheets.
The hostel which was acclaimed at a time as the cleanest undergraduate hostel in the university of calabar is more of a ‘corpse’ rather than a shadow of itself.
Despite the fact that students were asked to pay extra to be moved into the new hostel, with days becoming weeks and months which have now outgrown a year. A definite response is yet to be made by authorities.
Rooms have been vacated, properties destroyed, beds soaked and floating, and one can only be concerned about the associated health hazards as the poor ventilation is super imposed on the increased humidity thereby creating a perfect culture for various microbes.
On a lighter note any student who goes through a semester in this hostel could withstand a number of diseases as their immunity is reinforced.
