The Nasarawa State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU), has again threatened to embark on another
indefinite industrial action if the management of the university failed
to pay their three months outstanding salaries.
The chairman of the union Dr. Theopholus Lagi, stated this after the
union’s emergency meeting in Keffi, saying it was frustrating that
government and the management of the university could not honour the
agreement reached before the suspension of the strike.
He said, if by Friday their three months outstanding salaries was not
paid to them, they would reconvene to decide on what action to take as
agreed upon by the congress.
“But for now, our ears are still open to their response and if for any
reason the management failed to pay us, ASUU would take an action
that it will shock the management.”
Meanwhile, the authority of the university was hopeful that before this
week runs out, the academic staff of the institution would be paid all
their outstanding salaries.
The Public Relation Officer of the university, Mr. Jamil Zakari who
confirmed this to our correspondent, said that, the management was
doing its best to get money from the state government, assuring that,
once that was done, they would be paid their entitlement.
He appealed to the union to consider the negative part of strike, as
embarking on another action would further affects the academic
calendar of the university with its attendant negative consequences.
Mr. Zakari noted that, now that academic activities have fully taken
effect after a prolong strike, allowing ASUU to embark on another
strike would be disastrous, “that is why effort is on by the management
to settle the matter ones and for all in order not to disrupt academic
activities”, he added.
