Nigeria has been granted the right to host the World Schools Debate Competition 2015 after the country had participated in the 2014 edition of the competition which took place in Bangkok, Thailand.
Announcing the commencement of the Presidential Schools Debate, which this year’s edition is tagged 54th Independence Anniversary Schools Debate, Coordinator of the Presidential Schools Debate, Dare Oritu, said Nigeria won the hosting right due to the brilliant performance of its students in Bangkok recently. The debate will attract participation from over 60 countries.
“Our performance at the last World Debate School Championship has given Nigeria the right to host the next international debate. By April next year, we are going to host the first World Schools Debate in Nigeria,” Oritu said.
Nigeria was recently promoted to the rank of competition committee membership, which gave it an edge to host the next year’s edition. The country was initially expected to compete against Germany for the 2016 event hosting right, but its participation in Bangkok earned it the 2015 hosting right.
This year’s Presidential Schools Debate ends today in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Chairman, Advisory Board of the debate and former Minister of State for Education, Professor Jerry Agada, said the competition, which was earlier scheduled to coincide with the nation’s independence anniversary, was put off following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the country.
Meanwhile, 26 states out of the 36 states of the federation are expected to take part in the independence debate.
