A total of 257 academic staff of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State have pulled out of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the role of the national president, Dr Nasir Isa Fagge in the case of corruption and mismanagement leveled against a member of the National Executive Council of the association, Dr Uzochukwu Onyebinama.

The affected staff is accusing the national president, which they claim is currently at war with the management of the institution for taking disciplinary measures against one of its own, Dr Onyebinama, the university’s former ASUU chapter chairman who was indicted for examination fraud.

Onyebinama who was said to have been indicted by a committee set up by the management of the institution to investigate his involvement in an examination fraud, went to court to challenge the disciplinary action taken against him by the university management and afterwards sought the sympathy of the union’s NEC to shield him from the mess.

The allegations leveled against Onyebinama ranged from exam malpractice to mismanagement of which the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Hilary Edeoga, explained to be the reason that lead to his suspension and removal from office as the Director, CEC.

Edeoga further explained that the Onyebinama’s suspension was as prescribed by the rules of service of the university concerning fraud and misconduct and not because of his role as ASUU chairman.

In a communiqué issued after its congress on Wednesday October 21, 2015, the chapter notified all relevant authorities of its resolution to officially withdraw its membership of the national union.

Part of the letter reads: “Effecetive Wednesday 21 October 2015, all members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, MOUAU branch cease to belong to and have nothing in common with the national body of the Academic Union of Universities, ASUU, currently led by Dr Nasir F Isa until further notice.

“…all teaching staff in attendance at the congress whose signatures appear in this communiqué and those for whom we stand proxy shall simply be known and addressed as the Academic Staff, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State led by Dr Joseph Adama as interim chairman and interim secretary until further notice”.
