The Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Professor Eghosa Osaghae, has pleaded with the Federal Government to extend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to the private universities in the country.
Osaghae said the call became imperative because both public and private universities have the same goals of training and research but are all underfunded, which the government is aware of.
The vice-chancellor, who made the appeal at Okada during a pre-convocation press briefing to mark the 12th convocation of the university, noted that 80 per cent of source of funds for TETFUND were tax from the private sector and as such, private universities should be allowed to benefit from the fund.
According to him, “The federal Government introduced Education Tax Fund (ETF), which later became TETFUND and the organised private sector pay large chunk of this money as tax. But today, the fund is meant for public institutions while private universities are left out. This is miscarriage of justice”.
The VC also pointed out that, “TETFUND is a common wealth and every institution, whether public or private that train children, should have access to.
“After all, interventions took place in Nollywood, textile and aviation industry respectively. Are these no private bodies? He queried.
Professor Osaghae also disclosed that steady public power supply has remained another major challenge facing the university, as the institution make use of generator for almost 18 hours to supply light and pump water.
He announced that a total of 773 persons would be conferred with first and higher degrees including diplomas at the ceremony, which would be held at the universities main auditorium.
He explained that of this number of graduands, 24 would be awarded with First Class Honors, while a total of 264 graduands each made the Second Class Upper and Lower Class divisions respectively.
