The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba chapter, has resolved to resume the strike it suspended in May, over non-payment of over N1 billion owed its members.

Dr Gbenga Aina, Acting Chairman of ASUU in the institution, made this known to newsmen in Anyigba on Saturday.
He said members would down tools from Sept. 1, if nothing was heard from the State Government by Monday, Aug. 31.

Aina said the state government reneged and did not respect the `gentleman agreement’ reached with the union before the suspension of the strike in May.

He said the failure of the government would now compel the lecturers to resume the industrial action.

The chairman said the promise to pay the debt in `Earned Academic Allowances’, was contained in the 2009 agreement reached between the union and the government.

He said that in the agreement, the government agreed to offset the debt in monthly installments of N25 million but that it reneged on the pledge.

ASUU, according to him, has resolved that if there was no positive response from the government at the end of August, the union would be left with no option than to resume the strike.

“As a union, our objective is to see that the standard of education in the institution does not fall below requirements and also ensure that the rights of our members are not trampled upon.

“We are parents too and we do not like it when we go on strike”, he said.

The chairman said the union arrived at the decision after a brainstorming session to find an avenue for soft landing but was left with no choice.

A member of the institution’s management who preferred anonymity, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that the management was equally worried over the matter but could do little about it.

He pleaded with the ASUU to show understanding against the backdrop of dwindling resources of government saying: “Government’s purse is lean at the moment.” (NAN)
