The federal government has advised students of the University of Ibadan sheath their swords as efforts were being made to resolved the issue that led to the closure of the institution.

The Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students Affairs, Nasir Adhama, in a press statement signed by his technical assistant on students, Jacob Okpanachi in Abuja said unrest in Nigeria universities was becoming disturbing and government would continue to meaningfully engage relevant stakeholders to advance proactive measure of dealing with situations.

“We appeal for calm and seek the understanding of all stakeholders in the bid by government to halt the trend which is taking a trajectory capable of disrupting the academic calendar of the institution.

“We use this medium to urge any aggrieved Nigerian student or group of students to avail themselves of alternative measures of settling disputes rather than taking to violence as their only resort.

“We also want to discourage students from destroying institution’s facilities as they are the direct beneficiaries of such provisions.

“Achieving development in the country demands orderliness to be maintained in carrying out all tasks and this is the standard that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would continue to maintain.

“We also wish to urge all student union leaders to maintain the peace while we urgently undertake an assessment of the remote and immediate causes of the crises. It is highly imperative to urge our students to conduct themselves in a manner that will enhance innovations, competitiveness and excellence,” he stated.

He said the office understood that some UI students had protested against the rustication of their colleague who took part in an earlier protest over the inadequate supply of water and electricity to the campus. It was said that the students were angered by management’s decision to expel the said student.
