Doing some mathematical calculation, from the onset of Waec , you will observe that one of the most failed subjects by students around the world is English Language. As we all know, English is not a mother tongue language, as it was just considered a foreign language that the colonial masters used in communicating with us during our early stage of developement. When it comes to the aspect of English Language, one has no bigger option than to take it very serious as it concerns even the educational level of Nigerians and even some developing countries around the globe today. English as a language, has been considered very vast, as it is not often used for communication alone, but has also developed a root in influencing most cultures and traditional practices today.

While i glance through the web portals of the various performances of students across the west African nation, i tend to understand that the high rate of failure in English Language, has been on the increase lately. Gone in the days when the language was anchored on “the language for the brilliant,” English language is fast penetrating into the communication of people located in the West of Africa and across the border. Does this mean that we will soon lose our cherished mother tongue? hmmmm, i still can’t say. Now what keeps me laughing, is the way we have made this language of more importance in our society. I had a friend back in those days, who was also doing igbo as part of his subjects in school, during the time for the class examination, he was given a test on all the subjects he was currently offering in school which included English and Igbo language. After he had written the exam and the result was released, he made a credit in Igbo, which is his mother tongue, and failed English. He was asked to resit that subject till he learns how to pass English language but when the reverse became the case, he furthered on without having to repeat his Igbo test.

Do you think that this country has valued her language or have we placed more respect for the foreign languages? Now i will leave you to answer these questions. Talking about some other things, i have observed the high failure in WAEC of lately.  What could be wrong with the educational level of our institution. For me, i believe we still have what it takes to make the best out of all our studies. What we lack is the apparatus and other learning aids that will gear our learning ability. After all, we have seen through the likes of Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe and a host of many other iconic blacks, who have in one way or the other contributed largely to the educational growth of the blacks today. Even if we are still considered as people with low understanding, i really have that instinct which tells me every hour seconds, and minutes that there would be a day the whole world will start celebrating the blacks.
