All the three trade unions at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State have suspended their over two-month-old strike.
The unions are the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, the Non-Academic Staff Union and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics.
The representatives of the unions said they arrived at decision to suspend the strike after meeting with the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, in Abuja.
According to the ASUP Chairman, Owoeye Tunji, the Minister of Labour, who also attended the meeting, directed the management of the school to pay its workers their Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Scale 15.
He added, “Apart from that, the meeting also resolved all other issues. It urged the management to withdraw all queries and pay backlog of salaries. On the deduction of pensions from casual workers, the management is resolving the issue. The issue of cooperative deductions is still lingering, but we are going to resolve it amicably.
“We are open-minded. We are suing for peace and we will allow for give and take. The management has been directed to implement Ibrahim Shekarau’s order.”
Meanwhile, authorities of the institution have commended the suspension of the strike, describing it as “a welcome development.”
A statement by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Ade Adeyemi-Adejolu, said the management was prepared to abide by the terms of the peace pact.
It added that the Rector, Dr. Taiwo Akande, had urged members of the unions to endeavour to cover all the lost grounds.
