The Engineering Faculty of Delta State University, Oleh Campus, which presently has interim accreditation, is on the brink of being disaccredited for lack of facilities and manpower except something urgent is done.

The provost, Oleh Campus of the Delta State University, Prof Benjamin Okaba, told our correspondent in an interview in Asaba at the weekend

Okoba while stating among others that the faculty has not admitted new student for the past three years, said the challenges facing the campus have been quite enormous, and appealed to the state government to come to the aid of the school.

He stated that while the engineering faculty could boast of sufficient physical structures, the buildings are virtually empty as there are no requisite manpower and facilities befitting of an engineering faculty.

The faculty, according to him, has acute shortage of qualified staff as the Civil Engineering department has only four permanent staff with a lecturer 1 as Head of Department.

This, he regrettably noted, is almost the same in all departments and even in the Faculty of Law.

This, he explained, necessitated the hiring of large numbers of casual staff, noting that out of 510, (as against just 40 causal staff in the Abraka campus of about 8 faculties), whosesalaries are internally sourced.

He lamented that the campus faces the challenge of sourcing over N3 million monthly to pay casual staff, even as he stated that the campus monthly subvention is a meager N500,000.

The management of the institution, he said, had therefore concluded plans to lay off a good number of the causal staff as it had become almost impossible to pay their salaries.
