Following calls by bank customers to extend the deadline for the Bank Verification Number (BVN) registration, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) have extended the deadline to October 31, 2015.
Customers had flooded banking halls as early as 6am yesterday so as to beat the deadline while they called for extension which was eventually obliged.
According to a statement issued by the director of banking supervision, Dipo Fatokun, the BVN registration has elicited tremendous interest from Nigerian banks’ customers who crowded the banking halls in order to beat the deadline.
“Furthermore, there is the need to give Nigerian banks’ customers in diaspora ample time to enroll in the programme. The guideline for their enrollment is being finalized and will be released soon,” the statement reads in part.
The CBN said that the extension is to facilitate a smooth completion of the registration exercise which started last year July and was supposed to end yesterday, June 30, 2014. Earlier on, the apex bank had clarified that contrary to the claims by deposit money banks (DMB) that there would be total restriction on accounts without the BVN after the deadline account holders can still have access to cash transactions while the e-banking transactions would be restricted.
