No fewer than 9,340 students graduated with degrees and diplomas in various disciplines from Benue State University in Makurdi on Saturday.
The figure arose from the 14th and 15th combined convocation.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charity Angya, congratulated the students for being among the privileged ones to have attended the institution.
She urged them to continue to impact positively on their various environments and to be good ambassadors of the institution.
She commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for supporting library, research and staff development in the institution.
She pointed out that 21 academic staff members were in various institutions abroad under the TETFund Staff Development Programme.
Angya commended the state and local governments for their support towards ensuring academic excellence of the institution.
“This had placed the school among the 10 African centres of excellence by the World Bank rating.’’
She said the institution had provided environment conducive for learning through renovation of classrooms and teaching aids to meet the basic NUC standard.
She stressed that the university needed more hostels, ICT units and classrooms.
“Lack of finance to address infrastructure and recurrent expenditure remains a difficult issue’’, Angya said.
Gov. Gabriel Suswam of Benue commended the management and students for moving the institution forward since inception.
Suswam stated that his government had remained faithful to the successful running of the university despite paucity of funds.
He promised to continue to support the school in any capacity even after his tenure.
Suswam enjoined everyone to eschew violence in the forthcoming elections.
The incoming Vice Chancellor, Dr Lawal Gumi, promised to bring his wealth of experience to ensure that the school achieved its mandate.
He called on all stakeholders to partner with the school to achieve its objectives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hilary Odeh of Sociology Department emerged as the overall best graduating student.
NAN further reports that two indigenes of the state, retired Justice James Ogebe and Late Sen. Joshua Adagba, were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees. (NAN)
