The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics on Saturday announced that it had resolved to resume its suspended nationwide strike on Friday, following failure of the Federal Government to fulfil its agreement with the union.
The union had suspended it’s three-month strike on July 17, when the National Assembly intervened in its negotiation with the government.
In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary, ASUP, Mr. Chairman Clement, said the union resolved to resume the strike after its 75th National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, on Saturday.
“In view of the continued insincerity of the government to honour the agreement reached with the ASUP, the NEC resolves that the union will resume the suspended strike with effect from 4th October, 2013,” the statement said.
ASUP said it observed the “frustrating inertia of the Federal Government to convincingly fulfil any of the promises and agreements reached with the union before the suspension of the strike on 17th July, 2013.”
The agreements, according to the statement, include CONTISS 15 Migration for lower cadres; NEEDS Assessment of polytechnics; release of white paper of visitation to federal polytechnics; discrimination between polytechnics and university graduates in job placement and career progression; and the constitution of governing councils for Federal polytechnics earlier omitted.
The union alleged that the National Assembly had displayed an “anti-labour” stance by moving minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list of the constitution to the concurrent list recently.
It added that the stance also showed in the proposed legislation against declaration of industrial strike by unions in the tertiary sector.
ASUP also accused the National Board for Technical Education of lack of commitment to meet the needs and demands of polytechnic education in Nigeria.
While it passed a vote of no confidence on the board, it called for immediate establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission to cater for the needs of the sector.
Also, the lecturers called for the removal of disparity between Higher National Diploma and degree certificates.
It called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the review of the Polytechnic Act.
