Fifty-nine students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been awarded scholarships worth N3.5m.
The scholarships were sponsored by the OAU Muslim Graduates’ Association and awarded during its annual reunion convention held at the university.
The National President of the association, Prof. Abdul Egbewole, who noted that previous beneficiaries of the scholarship programme had performed excellently, said the organisation had given scholarships worth N17.56m to students of the institution since inception.
He said the association, founded about two decades ago, was aimed at educating the public on social ills.
Commending the association, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the OAU, Prof. Ayobami Salami, said, “For many years they have been consistent and exceptional in awarding scholarships to students. If we have five or six of them, the story will not be the same.”
Salami said the institution would continue to collaborate with the association for the benefits of the academic community.
A businessman, Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN, who was guest speaker at the public lecture organised to mark the 11th convention, lamented the decay in the public school system.
He said, “I remember the highest numbers of students from the highly competitive government colleges came from public schools, which tells you the quality and standard of public education in those days. What happened to our public education of old?
“ I also remember what happened while I was in the University of Lagos in 1978. Some went for advanced levels abroad and came back to Nigeria for university education. The universities in Nigeria were good and rated the best.”
He said the country must focus on knowledge development and application as part of ongoing efforts to boost economic performance.
He urged Muslims to conduct their affairs credibly and shun corrupt tendencies to retain their integrity.
