Often times it has been noticed that UTME candidates with scores below 15o have taken it upon themselves to give up their chances of admission for that year because they believe their performance is kind of below standard or no Nigerian institution will admit them with such low score. Sure that could be true but false to an extent because JAMB is only one out of the numerous gateways to admission into any institution of your choice and not the only available channel.

Infact, there are several candidates in the past with 150 as their scores who will be gaining admission this year ,regardless of their ill performance in the recently conducted UTME exercise and i know what your question would be like. How? Now the next line quenches your curiosity.

Did you score 150 or below in 2016 JAMB UTME exam? Then Take any of these steps:

Firstly you must be aware that their are four different gateways you could gain admission.These are:

1.) pre-degree programmes (Universities),

2.) Evening Programmes (polytechnics),

3.) Part-time programmes (universities and polytechnics) and

4.) IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) .

A greater percentage of students have been admitted via any of the mentioned four above and this is why you see your friends with low JAMB score become students while you still remain candidates or a JAMBite.

1.) Pre-Degree Programmes (Universities) – This is one of the major ways alot of candidates who were either not favored by PUTME scores or JAMB have adopted over the years and this is one of the surest way to gain admission. In most schools like Uniport, this programme is called “School of Basic Programme,” while other schools carve out their various names for it; but do not be confused as they all mean the same thing. The Pre-degree programme is carried out in these Universities where it last 1 year. Candidates who emerge successful in the course of the Pre-degree programme examination will be admitted directly into 100 Level of the school. Note that, it is your performance at the end of the Pre-degree programme that gurrantees you admission.

2.) Evening Programmes (Polytechnics) – Mostly Polytechnics engage in this task. You get to attend classes but only at evenings. You may decide to call it a Night class, but that does not matter. Evening programmes candidates get admitted directly to 100 level just like UTME candidates, the only difference here is you are likely going to spend one additional year. That is 5 years for a course a UTME candidate would have spent 4 years on. One of the major disadvantages of this programme is the cost of running it for that 12 months (1 year).

3.) Part-time programmes (universities and polytechnics) – This programme is similar to evening programme candidates but what differentiates it from the other is their classes are mostly held during weekends (Not applicable to all schools though). It is very expensive to run.

4.) IJMB means Interim Joint Matriculation Board, while IJMBE is the “Examination” itself. IJMB is an Advanced-Level (A-Level) Course, which you take for 9 months, after which you take a final exam that gives you a certificate.You can see a list of schools that accept IJMB HERE. The good part of this is that; at the end of the 9 months programme, you will be admitted  into 200 level directly instead of 100 level like the other alternative channels.

The 5th option is  “Try Again.” But if i were you, i won’t wait for another year to write JAMB, i will simply run any of the programme and forge ahead. Personally, Plan 1 and 4 will be either best for a young candidates who does not want to run into much cost.
