Workers of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) have staged a protest over alleged non-remmitance of allowances and tax deducted from salaries to statutory quarters.

The workers said their protest was targeted at the varsity’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Asuzu, who they said, had “ensured poor condition of service in FUOYE.”

The workers had massed in Oye at about 7.00a.m and had blocked the Ado-Lokoja-Abuja Federal highway and made bonfire on the road to vent their anger over alleged disparity in salaries payable in the university compared to other federal institutions.

They called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately sack the vice chancellor and the bursar for allegedly running the institution in secrecy and creating atmosphere of enmity and suffering for workers.

The placard-carrying protesters also blocked the road leading to the university and the main gate and prevented top management staff from gaining entry.

The vice chancellor refused to show up at the campus because of the severity of the protest, while other top management staff, who were already within the university premises were said to have immediately fled in different directions when they received the threat that they could be attacked by the irate workers.

The university was among the nine universities   established by President Jonathan in 2011.

The spokesman of the angry staff members and a lecturer in the university, who, however, craved anonymity, alleged that the vice chancellor and bursar had been denying the staff of their relocation and hazard allowances, while only paltry sum had been paid to the staff.

When called to respond to the protest, Asuzu could not be reached for comment, while some of his staff confirmed to journalists that he could not resume for work owing to security threat.

The spokesman, who threatened that they would make the university ungovernable for Professor Asuzu, except the Federal Government took decisive action against the management, alleged the authority of deducting outrageous tax from their salaries.

The academic staff added that the University had not effected any mass promotion for workers since the advent of the university, saying the few ones that were done were done selectively.

He said: “No to anti-transformational agenda. Oye/Ido/Osi axis is volatile politically in the history of the country, but we are for President Jonathan. That is why we want him to wade into this matter without delay.

“Under normal circumstances, each senior staff ought to receive between N.1.2 to N1.5 million as relocation allowance as introduced by the FG in 2007, but we were only paid N252, 000 in three instalment when our agitation was becoming so deafening.

“On the issue of Hazard Allowance, Ekiti State University has been

enjoying it since 2008, but we were denied on the basis that the Federal University, Akure was not paying. But nothing has so far been done even when FUTA has started paying.

“To end all these problems, we call on the University to implement the

recommendations of the Prof Aganga-chaired committee which stated that

tax must no longer be based on consolidation but be worked based on

basic salaries of all workers and the excess deductions must be

refunded to all workers without delay.

“Again, the National Housing Scheme which the management has mandated

should be made optional while all allowances being paid in Federal

University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State and in Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State and other Federal Universities established in 2011 should be paid without delay,” he said.

Also shedding light on how the staff were being allegedly cheated, another staff of the University, Mr Ojo Sylvanus Foluso , said the Vice Chancellor would return a sum of N400 million to the Federal Ministry of Education as unspent subvention for 2014 this December, even when workers are languishing.

“It has been an established practice that a university will get 30 per cent of any amount return to the FG. So what they are trying to do is to get the money and spend not minding whether we are made to suffer or not,” he said.
