Be it the quality standard of living or new-edge healthcare facilities, be it economical living conditions or diverse culture, Canada has time and again proved itself to be a safe space for immigrants across the globe. Every year, thousands and thousands of citizens from the world travel to Canada temporarily or permanently for the exact same reason.

But to be a lawful employee in Canada, one has to obtain a legal work visa and permit, which is usually a standard requirement for foreign citizens. So, if you are thinking of moving to Canada to take up a job, then try and maintain the following instructions so that the process of getting a work visa and permit becomes smooth.

Types of Work Permit in Canada

There are essentially two types of work permit in Canada – open work permit and employer-specific work permit. While the former lets you work with any employer of your choosing in Canada (except for those who don’t comply with the labor requirements), the latter allows you to work with only one specific employee.

Open Work Permit

If you have a spouse or family member who has permanent residency in Canada, you can ask them to invite you to work in Canada. The government of Canada gives Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) that would allow you to work in Canada until you get permanent residency there.

LMIA – Labour Market Impact Assessment

LMIA is a legal document that ESDC (Employment Social Development Canada) issues an employer that enables them to hire an employee belonging to a foreign country.

Under this, if a Canadian employer can’t fulfill their job vacancy through a Canadian citizen in 90 days, then they can hire a foreign citizen instead. For instance, the TFWP (Temporary Foreign Worker Program) helps foreign nationalities get employment and work visas in Canada for a temporary time period. The ESDC and IRCC (Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada) work hand in hand for providing Canadian work permits through multiple streams.

These streams can include high and low-wage workers, foreign agricultural workers, foreign academics, in-home caregivers, and the global talent stream. Once you get the LMIA approval, you can even apply for a work permit visa in Canada or even a permanent residence.

PGWP – Post Graduate Work Permit

If you happen to be an international student who is studying in Canada, you can work there under an educational program for a specific amount of time, depending upon the timeframe of the program.

Usually, one has to choose an educational program of at least eight months for being eligible for PGWP.

Any educational program with a time frame of eight months to two years provides the same length of work period validity as the length of their educational program. If the educational program is more than two years, you would get PGWP validity for three years.

BOWP – Bridging Open Work Permit

BOWP allows immigrants to continue their employment tenure in Canada while they are still waiting for their application procedure to get completed. The work permit available through this is valid for six months or more. This protects the immigrant from unnecessary harassment from their local country and gives them time to explore the labor market.

So, apply to the concerned program that matches your eligibility, research, and start your journey towards getting employment in Canada.
