UNICAL News Update: The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been shut over alleged unpaid salaries to the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and their counterparts, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU – UCB, UNICAL chapters .
It would be recalled that late October this year, the University was shut down for two weeks following a protest form students for alleged lack of basic facilities such as light, water, among others.
The recent closure which started Friday followed allegations over what the staff described as unfair treatment by the out-going Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof James Epoke.
When National Accord visited the university on Friday afternoon, all the gates, including the small gate leading to the main campus of the university, were shut leaving a large pool of vehicles outside the university gate as even those inside the campus could not have access to drive out.
NASU -UCB Chairman, Mrs. Alice Odu told this reporter that their union members decided to take the action after seven days of warning to the out-going administration led by Prof Epoke.
Odu alleged that in the last four years, there have been no overtime payments nor other allowances paid to NASU members as was the case before Epoke came on board.
Epoke, whose tenure is ending in few weeks, seems to be facing a herculean task as both staff and students express discontent either over alleged unpaid allowances or poor facilities on campus.
This discontentment is evidenced in the fact that the institution had been shut two times within a period of less than two months.
Efforts to reach the Vice Chancellor proved abortive but a staff who craved anonymity told this reporter that the VC was in an emergency meeting with the Senate of the University with a view to calming frayed nerves.
