The Bursar of the University of Calabar, Mr. Peter Agi, has been suspended from office. The suspension which is with immediate effect followed an emergency meeting of management of the University held today.
A release signed by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Moses Abang, said the suspension was based on the arrest of the Bursar by the Nigeria Police on allegations of fraud, forgery and threat to life.
The release further accused the Bursar of impersonating the Vice-Chancellor on the CBN e-payment platform by making final approvals and payments, a duty which it noted, is the responsibility of the Vice-Chancellor as the Chief Accounting Officer of the University.
Other crimes of the Bursar include refusal to register the Vice-Chancellor on the e-payment platform, a situation which allows all bank transactions and alerts to be forwarded to the immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke; deliberately orchestrating measures aimed at ensuring that the University loses accreditation of its Medical programmes by refusing to purchase buses for the departments of Public Health and Community Medicine which is a major requirement for accreditation; deliberate refusal to carry out lawful directives of the University Council to purchase official cars for the DVC Admin and the Dean of Graduate School and refusal to hand over to any of his deputies in his absence thereby creating a vacuum in the administration of the Bursary.
The release also accused the Bursar of refusal to pay Tetfund contractors even when they had been duly cleared for payment thereby making it impossible for the University to exhaust the 2013 allocation to qualify for the next tranche.
The Bursar was also accused of illegally mobilizing a group of people suspected to be cultists for a violent protest that resulted in the molestation of staff and journalists.
Also included in the litany of offences is the calous refusal of the Bursar to pay staff entitlements even when due process had been followed in utter disregard to the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, among many others.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Atim Mensah, has been appointed Acting Bursar while Mr. Joseph Odum is to take over as the Deputy Bursar, Funds.
