The Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, Sunday received a knock from the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Deji Omole, over his recent pronouncement on banning of post-JAMB examinations in Nigerian universities, describing it as incursion into the autonomy of the universities.
Describing the decision as autocratic, the ASUU boss in a press statement he made available to ‘New Telegraph’ in Ibadan, said that rather than concentrating on the fundamental issue of funding universities and meeting the ASUU-FGN 2009 agreements where the Federal Government was owing public universities about N1billion intervention fund, the Minister had forayed into a terrain where he had no powers.
Omole said that the Education Minister seemed unaware of the extant university autonomy granted the Senate of Nigerian universities to determine the procedures for the conduct of admission and regulate admission of its students.
Omole said that the blanket ban was a product of “shallow thought in high places as exemplified by a pronouncement to ban the conduct of Post-JAMB examinations, which is not based on sound research as expected from a Minister of Education”.
Dr Omole stated that the decentralisation of JAMB should be carried out by federal government since the examination body cannot conduct credible and dependable examinations upon which credible universities like the University of Ibadan can rely on.
