The Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) said it would ensure quality assurance measures before approving the open distance learning in tertiary institutions in the country.
The NUC executive secretary, Professor Julius Okojie, stated this at a Stakeholders Forum/Open Distance Learning Workshop organized by the Centre for Open Distance and e-Learning (CODeL) of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
He stated that such quality assurance measures being put in place should not be seen as being rigid in approving open distance learning by the commission but a way to make universities go through the proper procedures.
Okojie who was represented by the director, Open and Distance Education of the commission, Dr. Olamide Adesina stated that NUC will give permission to any university that had gone through the laid down rules and regulations.
He said that the commission must allow the laid down rules to be followed because the nation’s economy could not afford to accommodate graduates with certificates that are not credible.
A guest speaker at the workshop, the chief press secretary to Niger State Governor, Dr. Ibraheem Dooba advocated that tertiary institutions in the country should be given permission to run the open distance learning because Nigeria is ripe to integrate e-learning into the educational system.
“E-Learning is the new twist to learning. Nigeria needs to wake up and embrace this development because it will give room for the nation to grow. If we do not heed to this wake up call, Nigeria will be left behind because the world will not wait for us,”he stated.
