An oil firm, ExxonMobil, says it has spent over N5bn in supporting Nigerian students pursuing university education across the globe.
The gesture comes as the company restated its commitment to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education in the country.
The General Manager, Exploration, Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited, Mr. Andrew Ejayeriese, stated this at the inauguration of the EEPNL University Assistance Programme lecture series at the University of Ibadan on Friday.
Ejayeriese, who spoke through the ExxonMobil Geoscience Coordinator, Mr. Gilbert Odior, noted that the company was desirous of promoting the quality of geosciences education in the nation’s universities.
Ejayeriese added, “As an institution, ExxonMobil has always placed a strong emphasis on supporting education at all levels, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. In the past two decades, we have spent over N5bn on undergraduate scholarships and annually commit substantial sums in awarding 13 postgraduate scholarships to deserving young Nigerians to some leading universities across the globe.
“We believe that equipping young Nigerians with relevant skills through quality education is the surest means of unlocking the huge socio-economic potential of our dear country and the lecture series is yet another significant step we are taking towards this desired destination.”
The series, he explained, would enhance communication and rapport among students, lecturers and oil industry professionals.
According to him, the gesture, which 16 Nigerian universities will benefit from by December this year in the first phase, will also see experienced professionals from the company mentor geosciences students.
