Worried by the nonchalant attitude of students in public schools, Ogun State government has introduced new guidelines for final year students to be eligible for enrolment free for West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination,WASSCE.
It is now mandatory for this set of students to make 80 percent attendance in classes before their final year examination fee will be paid by the state government.
The state commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barr. Segun Odubela, disclosed these while fielding questions from newsmen at the end of day three of the monitoring exercise for the second term 2014/2015 academic session.
He said the measure was part of steps being taken by the state government to check occurrence of mass failure in WASSCE amongst students in the state public secondary schools.
According to him, government has noticed that many students are not taking their studies seriously since they know that the WAEC fee would be paid by the state government.
“Most students are taking the free education policy of the state government for granted. They believe that whether they attend classes or not, they will be presented for final examination. To check the ugly trend, some measures have to be put in place and this is what we have started with,” Odubela said.
