Obong Varsity News: The Obong University in Akwa Ibom state has awarded first degrees to its 64 graduands while honouring Douglas Boateng, Chancellor of Knutsford University College, Ghana with a doctorate in science.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Udoudo Ekanemesang said the graduands have been found worthy in character and learning, after completing their academic programme, will receive first degree in various disciplines from the institution.
He said “HRM Okuku Dr. Ime Udousoro Inyang , the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom Local Government and former Chairman, AkwaIbom State Supreme Council of Chiefs will be conferred with Doctor of Science in Public Administration and Douglas Boateng, Chancellor of Knutsford University College, Ghana and a very successful business man will be awarded Doctorate of Science in Management.”
“Obong University is growing in significant ways. It started eight years ago with 19 students, this session we are expecting about 800 students. During the first Convocation, 24 Students were awarded degrees, that number has more than double at this second convocation,” Ekanemesang told a press conference at the university campus ahead of its second convocation this Saturday.
Of the 64 graduands, a female is graduating with first class in Economics, 24 others graduates with second class upper, 37 with second class lower, while two persons graduates with a third class.
He said the Convocation will be preceded by a lecture to be delivered by the chancellor of Leeds City University, Ibadan, Professor Gabriel Ogumola on the “Role of Government in Developing and Sustaining Public Universities.”
According the VC, the university is continually retooling and improving its programmes to meet international best standards.
He added that university charges one of the lowest fees among all private universities in Nigeria.
“By virtue of it rural location, the fees are deliberately kept low to make tertiary education affordable to our young men and women from most rural communities. In a knowledge economy, university education is a necessity. Tertiary education should be available to the maximum number of our youths,” Ekanemesang said.
