FOURTEEN political parties are currently presenting to Nigerians, presidential candidates to be elected come March 28. Nigerians will vote for a president who is expected to carry out his or her party’s manifesto and meet the needs of the teeming populace.

Manifestos cover a large spectrum of the party’s perceived needs of the nation as regards the ills of the nation. The education sector has continually been said to be declining or in need of policies that are implemented to revamp the sector in correspondence with changing times.

Of the voting populace, education stakeholders are also going to be affected by the policies of the party that comes into or remains in power. Here, high points of policies targeted at the education sector, within available party manifestos, have been brought to the fore and the notice of stakeholders.

Kowa Party is fixed on compulsory education for all, as a solution to the ills of the sector and the future of the nation as a whole. All Progressive Congress, APC, is after implementing provisions of the Universal Basic Education Act with emphasis on gender equity in primary and secondary school enrolment whilst improving the quality and substance of our schools.

Each party has touched key aspects of the sector, however, the onus is on parents, guardians, uncles, aunts, siblings, grandparents, teachers, educational institution administrators and students themselves, to research the manifestos further, as they are available to all and pick that which best meets their needs, at the moment, for the future and generations to come.People’s Democratic Party, PDP, promises to integrate into the formal education system, the political education of the citizenry with emphasis on the provision of the Constitution, the state and democratic principles, as well as ultimately provide free, functional education at all levels. While United Progressive Party, UPP, has declared that it would make education the first charge on the income of the nation to stem the ill-treatment of teachers and students.

Kowa Party, stating its diagnosed ills in the sector, provides thus; “The limitations of our educational curriculum, especially its failure to accord the necessary attention to instruction on civics and the socio-political history of the nation, has diminished our respect for our own cultural identity as well as for our languages and our original national values.

Honing on compulsory education as remedy; “KOWA believes in education as a fundamental human right crucial to the advancement of the nation. We will promote compulsory education up to the senior secondary school for every Nigerian child and increase government investment with a view to broadening access to education for all and improving quality at all levels, including higher education, teacher training and adult education. The promotion of research will be one of the cornerstones of our educational policy.”

Focusing on the Universal Basic Education Act, All Progressives Congress states its policies thus; “Fully implement and enforce the provisions of the Universal Basic Education Act with emphasis on gender equity in primary and secondary school enrolment whilst improving the quality and substance of our schools.

Substantial investments

Reinstate the now abandoned Teacher Training Colleges to train teachers. Target up to 10 percent of our annual budget for this critical sector whilst making substantial investments in training programmes at all levels of the educational system. Create elaborate incentive schemes to attract the best and the brightest to teach in our schools.

Declaring their objectives for education in Nigeria, People’s Democratic Party’s manifesto says; “Education is an important social instrument for national unity amongst the diverse peoples of Nigeria. The party in government shall: ensure that the educational system is improved upon; ultimately provide free, functional education at all levels; integrate into the formal education system the political education of the citizenry with emphasis on the provision of the Constitution, the state and democratic principles; foster and expand education all levels and fields of knowledge; and encourage private and voluntary organizations to establish schools subject to compliance and adherence to existing government policies.”

Stating the ills of the sector as the ill treatment of teachers and students, United Progressive Party, UPP, has declared that it would make education the first charge on the income of the nation thus; “It is clear what has gone wrong in the last 30 years. The control of educational funding and educational decision-making were centralised in the hands of military men who did not really care. Their decision did not merely impact, as they thought, on the classroom and the teacher. They impacted also, on the development of the adaptive, skills of the nation, on our competitiveness in a fast-moving global market place, on the propagation and growth of our humanity and the maintenance of the sanity of our world. So important is education that it ought to “be as of right’ the first charge on the income of the nation.”
