Amidst leadership crisis rocking the National Examination Council (NECO) the registrar of the council, Professor Promise Okpala said he is still in charge of the council till April when his tenure will end.

The clarification of the registrar is coming on the heels of a letter earlier sent on the 23th of January 2015 directing Okpala to handover to the Director of Finance to proceed on terminal leave and another letter dated 28th of same month saying Okpala should stay till April.

Making the clarification on position of things yesterday the registrar stated in a press conference at NECO headquarters that he has the instruments of the office as the registrar adding that as a political appointee, he was not supposed to proceed on terminal leave like a career civil servant.

The registrar explained that although the Ministry of Education in a letter dated 23/1/2015 directed him to proceed on terminal leave, the same ministry has retrieved the letter after taking note of the lapses in the earlier directive, by sending another letter directing him to continue in office and circulated to the board members of the council dated 28/1/2015.

According to him the ministry had viewed his position as a civil service work instead of tenure appointment and that the latest letter override the earlier letter of terminal leave that some people were relying on.

Okpalla therefore expressed surprise at the reason why people were parading the first letter without taking cognisance of the other letters that followed, even as he said that those who fomented trouble about the issues were not staff but outsiders sponsored to cause crisis at the council.
