The National Council for Arts and Culture has recommended that arts be made compulsory in primary and secondary schools.

The council also stated that arts holds very bright prospects in the country.

The NCAC Director-General, Mrs. Dayo Keshi, stated this in Abuja while presenting awards and certificates to 19 pupils who participated in the 44th and 45th World Arts Competition.

According to Keshi, as children grow into adults, there is the need for them to know the real essence of their creativity, which is an industry that will thrive in the future.

She said, “So, if these children are going to become wealthy billionaires tomorrow, they should start practising what will actually take them there. We are going to push this forward as a way of diversifying our economy, and more importantly, as a big way of creating jobs. Once you are versed in creativity, you are expressing what you are, who you are and why you think you are what you are.

“The teaching of arts should be made compulsory in school curriculum, particularly at the foundation level; compulsory in the sense that it will be regarded as one of the main subjects that children should be encouraged to take. So, if you don’t channel it right, you might even have a child who might be frustrated. So, definitely, arts should be one of the main subjects that our children should be encouraged to offer.

“I see arts taking over oil as a major source of revenue for Nigeria in less than 10 years’ time because the truth is that it is natural for you to keep focusing on one area of the economy. However, great countries in the world, including China, have placed premium on arts. So, why not Nigeria, which has a number of young creative people. This is where we should encourage our people and children. This is an area we need to invest in heavily.”

Keshi added that the children were from different schools while the competition was tied to the schools.

Also, the Director-General of National Gallery of Arts, Mr. Abdullahi Muku, represented by a Director, Mr. T. Akusu, stressed the importance of arts in national development.
