The striking lecturers of the Nasarawa State university under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has cut down its demand, insisting that the state government pays 20% of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) or the union would continue with the industrial action.
ASUU also asked the state government to pay to the striking lecturers their outstanding three months salary arrears if they must suspend their two months old industrial action.
Briefing Newsmen after the union’s emergency congress in Keffi, the chairman of the union, Dr. Theophilous Lagi, said both Governing Council and ASUU have agreed in principle to suspend the strike, but the council must fulfil its own side of the bargain.

“We have agreed to suspend the strike, if government fulfills its own part of the deal. If they can do that today, we are ready to resume work tomorrow “, he assured.
Meanwhile, the state government has pledged to immediately provide to the university N202 million with additional N50 million for emolument and capital expenditure respectively.
However, a top government official told our reporter that, the state “government was skeptical to risk the released of the funds to the union as condition to call off the strike because of its past experience with the union”.
He said, “government might either transfer the money to the coffers of the school management for onward release to ASUU once it confirmed that the strike was suspended, or they should first suspend the industrial action to convince the government that what happened in the past would not repeat itself,” he added.
