The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on the Lagos State Government to intervene urgently in resolving the crisis facing the Lagos State University, Ojo.

The association also urged the state government to ensure the immediate return of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, to his Ojo campus office.

The VC, for some seven months now, has been operating from the Ikeja campus of the university. He was forced out of the Ojo campus on March 16, 2015 by some staff union members in the university.

The unions, comprising members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, had pelted the VC with sachet water.

But examining the crisis on Friday, NANS in the South West, through its Secretary General, Obanobi Bidemi, criticised the continued lock-out of the VC, saying the action had crippled all academic and social activities in the school.

The association noted that the students were the worst hit as they had been unable to access their last semester results due to the absence of the VC to preside over the senate meeting.

The crisis, he added, had resulted in insecurity and stifled infrastructural development on campus and caused the continued delay of the 2014/ 2015 convocation.

The authorities of the school had earlier scheduled the convocation for March 18, 2015.

Urging the state government to ensure the immediate return of Obafunwa on campus, Bidemi noted that the responsibility of the VC was not limited to satisfying the interest of the workers.

According to him, the VC’s bigger responsibility is the concern of the over 15,000 current students of the university.

He added, “The students are the largest stakeholders in the institution. In advanced institutions, it is strange that because of failure to pay the arrears of the staff unions, the administrative aspect of the citadel must be jeopardised or the VC must go as we always have it in LASU. If the VC is sent out of the institution, will that solve the problem of the 31-year-old institution?

“It is very important for the university senate to call for emergency senate meeting to consider the results of the just concluded examinations of all LASUITES so as to fast-track the process of releasing the results. A delay in the consideration of the results might delay the release of the results and prolong the academic pursuit of most students.”

Among the demands of the association are that the university senate and administrative block must be opened by the Lagos State Government within seven days.

It also insisted that administrative activities in LASU must commence in full within the given ultimatum; and that the state government should swiftly address reasonable demands of the staff unions.
