A lawmaker representing Oshodi/Isolo constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Idumogu Jude Emeka has kicked against a call for the introduction of mother tongues in public primary and secondary schools.
Speaking against the backdrop of a motion moved on the floor of the House for the introduction of Yoruba Language in public schools in the state on Thursday 18, June, the lawmaker, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that people should be allowed to choose the language of their choice.
“I actually believe that we should give priority to mother tongues, but it shouldn’t be made compulsory. The children should find a way of picking the language they prefer.
“It is better we are allowed to choose and we should not copy the Western world, where they speak their mother tongues anyhow. Everything depends on the people and how they feel,” he said.
However, his counterpart from Amuwo/Odofin 2 (PDP), Hon. Bello Akeem supported the motion that Yoruba Language should be made compulsory in schools.
“Despite the fact that I am married to an Igbo woman, I still want my children to understand Yoruba Language. It is a good development”, he said.
Also, Hon. Dayo Famakinwa Olufemi from Ajeromi/Ifelodun 1 said that it is important for children to understand their mother tongue, saying that Nigeria should emulate countries like Germany and others that speak their mother tongues as official languages.
