The Ministry of Education has confirmed that Maryam Abacha American University of Niger (MAAUN) is on the Ministry’s list of accredited Universities based on the Niger Ministerial order.

The development follows a controversy that arose when the National University Commission (NUC) questioned the degrees awarded by the school, warning Nigerian students against enrolling in the university’s programmes.

Maryam Abacha American University of Niger Republic (MAAUN) Authorities in Niger had earlier confirmed the accreditation of the Maryam Abacha American University, Maradi, Niger Republic.

Following this, the Ministry of Education in a release signed by J. N. Ibe, the Director of Education Support Services for the acting Permanent Secretary, that the issue has been resolved. “The federal Ministry of Education and the National University Commission have resolved the issue surrounding the accreditation status of Maryam Abacha American University, Maradi, Niger Republic,” the letter said.

“The university accreditation agreement was contained in the Niger ministerial order No.000241/MES/R/I/SG/DGE/DL/DES/DEPRI dated 26th November, 2013, delivered by the Diaspora, Niamey, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria.”

The National Universities Commission had called to question the credibility of the degrees issued by the MAAUN. The commission had asked Nigerians to stop patronising online universities and other degree awarding institutions operating online and degrees from the Maryam Abacha American University in Niger.

The University runs undergraduate degrees in core sciences, social sciences and the arts; and is expected to graduate its first set of students in 2016.
