Medical Colleges in English-speaking West African countries have called on their members to embrace information technology for quality assurance.

This was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of delegates from the different colleges in Lagos.

The National Postgraduate Medical College, Ijanikin, Lagos, hosted the meeting attended by members of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, West African College of Surgeons and the West African College of Physicians.

The NPMCN President, Prof. Rasheed Arogundade, who addressed the participants, urged them to embrace Information Communication Technology, saying it would enhance their effectiveness.

He said, “Members should not relent until full digitisation of records as well as online registration and payment for examinations are achieved. The harmonised accreditation guidelines, which have been circulated to all sister colleges, should also be adopted.’’

Arogundade, who noted that there was a renewed effort to get the Liberia College of Surgeons and Physicians to join the forum, also stressed the need to contain the threat posed by the re-emergence of the Ebola Virus Disease in Liberia.

Saying that the development put other countries in the region at risk, Arogundade, said, “All colleges should continue to be proactive in the education/advocacy in the current Ebola outbreak and take appropriate actions.’’

The World Health Organisation in May had declared Liberia free of the disease. But a routine surveillance by health authorities had detected a new case in a young patient who died on June 29. The deceased reportedly had contact with more than 20 persons who are currently under surveillance.

According to the WHO, the EVD has killed more than 10,000 people since its December 2013 outbreak.
