There was a mild drama at the Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday when protesting lecturers and students of the Lagos State University (LASU) called for the resignation of the institution’s vice chancellor, Professor John Obafunwa and also snubbed the leader of the House, Hon Ajibayo Adeyeye in his attempt to address the rampaging students.

The lawmaker who was anxious to placate the students numbering about 100 was thoroughly embarrassed as he was shunned by the students while he called for public address system to address them.

The protesters complained of not being attended to by the Assembly, as they had wasted more than enough time before Adeyeye came out to address them.

Speaking with newsmen, the chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU\LASU), Dr Adekunle Idris accused the VC of destroying the LASU system.

He said, “We came here to make a peaceful protest to bring our case to public domain since no one has been able to put to check the vice chancellor.

“Prof Obafunwa does not understand the way a university is being run including the issue of appointment and promotion of lecturers. He has been doing irregular promotions. He also gives PhD without having one”.

In his contribution, the zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Adesola Nassir explained that the mass rally in partnership with the Joint Action Front (JAF) and other civil societies is a bid to seek government’s intervention in resolving the crisis.

The protesters including civil society groups and professors of the institution, demanded the resignation of the vice chancellor, a reversal of Obafunwa’s vindictive withdrawal of PhD certificates and interdiction of lecturers and workers and also end impunity and abuse of LASU laws and regulations by the vice chancellor.

He said,” Our union is in need to further encourage the State Government to do the needful and help LASU to redirect its gradual descent to crises, would be joining other civil society groups to stage a rally to further call the attention of the good people of Lagos State and Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s government to the brewing crisis at LASU.

“If the crisis is not arrested, we are certain the consequence would not be in the interest of the government. For the umpteenth time, we are asking that the Lagos State Governor and visitor to LASU, Mr. Babatunde Fashola to call the LASU Vice Chancellor to order, whilst at the same time setting up visitation to LASU immediately,” he stated.

The union warned that alternative to ignore the call is to watch LASU snowball into more crises with the attendant implications.

Speaking on the crisis that had pitched the members of the union against management of the institution, the union lamented that rather than abate the development at LASU, the situation has since gone from bad to worse.

He said, “Lagos State University is as we gather here is sliding into chaos because the Vice Chancellor Professor John Obafunwa has refused to listen to all prodding of reasons on the way to ensure industrial harmony.

In place of all known university administrative practices and values, he continues to evolve, encourage and brazenly at times, orchestrate divisions within our Union and possibly others too,” he stated.
