The immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Joseph Atubokiki Ajienka, has said during his tenure, the university raised over N100 million through endowment of professorial chairs.

Ajienka disclosed this in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, while speaking at a gala night and reception organised in his honour by the management of Nigerian Energy Chronicles, a weekly energy magazine.

He said, “During my tenure, over One Hundred Million Naira came into the university through professorial chair endowments and I believe a lot more have been coming. It is like changing the paradigm.”

The former Vice Chancellor reiterated his call on scientists and engineers working in Nigerian universities to go into research and come up with solution to power generation that are sustainable in the universities.

Ajienka said, “The point is once we are able to solve the power problem in our universities, it is not just the independent power plant, but our engineers and scientists should also engage in research to solve the problem in a very sustainable manner.

“Once we are able to solve the power problem, and then, internet, then, we can settle down to conduct research and come up with findings that will benefit our universities and society in general.”

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Ndowa Lale, said the management of the institution will continue to consult Ajienka on serious and important matters considering his immeasurable inputs in the development and growth of the school.

Describing the former Vice Chancellor as a fantastic engineer known across the world, Lale said the university will continue to celebrate Ajienka, because he did a lot of positive thing in the institution.
