Microsoft Excel is really an interesting application that enables one perform series of mathematical calculations easily. Microsoft Excel is simply a great software when it comes to calculations and other associated terms involving calculations.
While we battle with this software, there are some functions or will I say formula that can save us a great deal of time and money when we put them into use.
I was given an assignment to type close to 200 names (including First names and Last names) in a single cell. I thought that was all! But the surprising part of this was when the tutor asked me to separate the first names into a different cell and the last name into another cell within 1 minute. That was when I accidentally discovered this little excel function which saved me the stress of doing such all over again.
This was how I separated both names into different cells using the LEFT and the Right Function.
- Open your Microsoft excel from your PC or Laptop
- Type a list of names in the same cell leaving their first name to the left and last name to the right.
- To separate the first name to the left to appear in a different cell, use this function =(LEFT(A2,FIND(” “,A2,1)-1))
Left |
- The A2 in the function above represents the cell you want that effect to take place on. So it depends on your cell number.
- When you are done with the selection, enter and watch the magic that takes effect.
- Now to separate the name in the right to a different cell, use this function =RIGHT(A2,LEN(A2)-FIND(” “,A2))
- Also note that A2 in the cell above represents your cell number. So it differs as to what cell you may be having that effect on
- This will separate the last name in the cell containing both last and first name into a different cell
