The Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu is to receive the support of France for the teaching of French language in the school.
The French attaché for Cooperation in Education and Deputy to Head of Service Nigeria, Daniel Rignault, made this known on Monday.
Rignault had led a delegation from the embassy and the Centre for French Teaching and Development, Enugu to visit the school. The Head of Department, Mass Communication, Mr. Chukwudi Anyianuka, received the team.
Rignault stressed that there was the need to ensure that students learnt and spoke French effectively.
He said, “Our interest in IMT is with a view to forging a relationship for the development and sustenance of Mass Communication and Journalism students’ mastery and interest in the French language.”
Rignault pledged to support the department in the provision of resources and logistics to attain its goals.
“I have urged the Director of CFTD, Enugu, Olivier Mouginot, to work out the modalities for the implementation of programmes, such as teaching French for specific professions, like journalism, and training teachers.
“When we are done here we will move to Ebonyi State and neighbouring states and seek to improve the study of French language in tertiary institutions there.”
Anyianuka explained that the fresh move by the embassy would further stimulate the students’ interest in learning the language.
He noted that French was a very important international language, particularly for the member-nations of the Economic Community of West Africa States as well as a language that is indispensable in international news reporting.”
