The Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau on Sunday, said that the Federal Government will establish polytechnics and colleges of education in states where there are no such institutions.

He disclosed this at an interactive session with journalists in Kano, saying: “It is the intention of President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure that each state in the country has a federal polytechnic and a college of education.

“Mr President has two main focuses on education sector, to increase access and improve the quality of education at all levels.’’

He said in the light of the objectives, the present administration established 12 new universities, four polytechnics and three colleges of education across the country.

Shekarau said that as part of effort to give the youth the opportunity to access education, the government had also established127 Tsangaya primary schools in the northern part of the country.

According to him, the 49 female boarding secondary schools are also established to boost the girl-child education in the country.

He noted that the establishment of these institutions had greatly increased the number of students currently undergoing various programmes in different tertiary institutions across the country.

The minister said that the government would continue to pay attention to the sector in order to improve the socio-economic status of the people.

“Education is the bedrock of any socio-economic and political development, hence we need to equip our educational institutions with up-to-date infrastructure and relevant text books to improve the quality’’, he said.(NAN)
