As part of efforts to arrest the proliferation of illegal schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Education Secretariat has begun the clampdown on schools, which did not meet the required standard set by the secretariat.

The leader of the delegation and acting Secretary of FCT Education Secretariat, Mrs Naomi Bikki, said the closed schools are not registered and never applied for licence to operate, that machinery has been put in motion, in making sure that illegal schools do not thrive in the territory.

Bikki while speaking to journalists during the delegation’s tour to Superstar International School and Rit-Success International School, both nursery and primary at Durumi 3 in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), said whoever intends to establish a school, must follow the guidelines of the secretariat.

The director, quality assurance of FCT Education Secretariat, Mr Ayuba Didam, said the measure is to send message to operators of illegal schools in the FCT, that the secretariat places much premium on quality education for the Nigerian child.

He stressed that the secretariat will not allow any illegal and mushroom school to thrive, except such school follows the rules guiding the establishment of schools in the FCT.

“Whosoever that wants to establish a school in the FCT, must seek guidance from the quality assurance department before he starts. Such persons must first make sure that the site is certified and fit for school.

“Then, he or she would be given permission to go ahead and establish a school that will meet international standard, taking into consideration all that is required in such school,” he said.

He frowned at those who are in the school business just to make money, while neglecting the real purpose of providing a conducive and comfortable learning environment for their pupils and students, adding that government is committed to giving quality education to students in the FCT.
