NSUK NEWS: The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dr Theopholius Daniel Lagi has threatened that the association would shutdown the university in the next two weeks if the management of the institution and the state government refused to meet their demands.
Dr. Lagi who stated this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Keffi, said that “our doors are still open for them to call us, to find amicable ways to address our grievances”.
This is confirming rumours making the round that the local chapter of ASUU has concluded plan to embark on an indefinite strike action on February 14, when students were expected to be writing their first semester examination for the 2015/2016 academic year.
The ASUU chairman, said although nobody was willing to go on strike because of its devastating effect on the academic and economic development of the school, they would be left with no option but to embark on the strike if nothing was done to avert it.
He mentioned non-implementation of promotion, dilapidated state of the university’s Law Faulty, appointment irregularities, lack of discipline, high tax deduction on Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), ambiguity in the university’s guideline, as some of the issues yet to be addressed by the university and the state government.
Dr. Lagi explained that some of these issues have lingered from 2009, after the union’s six months prolonged strike over funding of university and basic remuneration of lecturers, “and since then, the state government has refused to honour the agreement made with the union”.
On the EAA, he said, the amount was tabulated in such a way that the university can comfortably pay the money over a period of time.
