A group of unemployed graduates seeking self-employment loan from the Oyo State government has appealed to the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi to release the loan.
The group’s spokesperson, Mr Tope Omotoso, told LEADERSHIP in Ibadan yesterday, that no fewer than 120 members of his group had met the necessary requirements for the N250,000 loan.
Omotoso said that the loan was at the instance of the state Ministry of Industry, Applied Science and Technology under Mr Dapo Lam Adesina as the commissioner, which called for applications from eligible unemployed graduates.
He said that every document including Guarantor’s Form and Indemnity Form was completed in February, adding that a letter of offer for the loan had also been given to each member of the group.
He wondered why the loan which had been approved by the government for disbursement since December 2014 was still being delayed.
The group leader said that Mr Okeleye, a director in the ministry responsible for the loan disbursement, told his group that the office was waiting for the governor who is expected to distribute the cheques to the beneficiaries.
He quoted Okeleye as saying that since the applicants have signed the loan agreement, the next thing was to collect their cheques.
According to him, the director had assured them that the cheques would be distributed to the beneficiaries before the 2015 elections.
Omotoso expressed fear that since the money had since been approved but had not been disbursed, anything could happen to it.
He said that his apprehension was informed by the fact that their guarantors who were civil servants signed an undertaking to pay back the loan in case of default.
‘’But now that no money was given to us, what do we do in case of a fraud?’’ he asked.
One of the guarantors who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed reservation on the delay of the loan and called for Ajimobi’s intervention.
‘’My concern is that I stood as guarantor for my brother and I signed a form in which I promised to pay from my salary in case of default. The form has already been put in my file; if somebody should bolt away with the money, they can say I should pay,’’ she said.
The spokesperson said that invitation for the loan began in June 2014 when the ministry called for applications and proposals as eligibility for the loan.
He said more than 200 applicants applied while only 102 were confirmed fit after the screening.
Omotoso who said that his group had visited the ministry more than 50 times since the processing of the loan began, appealed to Ajimobi to intervene in the matter and release the loan to his members.
