For engaging in examination malpractices, the authorities of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, have expelled two students of the institution.
The university is also putting in place adequate facilities to secure accreditation for its 30 courses ahead of the National Universities Commission’s visit to the institution this August.
The vice chancellor of the university, Prof Isaac Asuzu, who made the disclosure yesterday while speaking with newsmen in Oye Ekiti, said the students were caught in the act during the 2013/2014 academic session.
Asuzu, who did not mention the students’ names, said they were expelled following the recommendation of the university’s Disciplinary Committee, adding that such sanction was to protect the integrity and academic standard of the university.
He also revealed that the university had constructed three new laboratories for Science Faculty and a central laboratory for the Faculty of Agriculture to meet the accreditation standard set by NUC.
Apart from the N500 million worth of equipment acquired for the newly built laboratories put in place to boost research, Asuzu said there were 175 desktop computers for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in all the departments and other equipment donated by a Scale G Firm, a private organization which trained the technical staff in a bid to increase the technical knowhow of personnel.
Asuzu disclosed that the University had completed the Visual Library where students could have access to books and international journals to broaden their horizons in their areas of specialty.
“We are very optimistic that many of these courses will get full accreditation. We have provided facilities that can meet the NUC’s standard.
“What makes our achievements more rewarding is the fact that we provided all these facilities through the internally generated revenues of this institution. We are working to meet the standards and nothing shall be spared to make sure that the standard is not compromised”, he said.
He added that only 1,000 students will be admitted out of over 6,000 applicants who sat for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in compliance with NUC’s directive
